Yes, sports betting is legal in Ontario. The federal government legalized sports betting nationwide in June 2021 by amending the Canadian Criminal Code [2]. This amendment allowed each province to create their own sports betting laws.

In July 2021, Ontario lawmakers created a new agency called iGaming Ontario (iGO) that would regulate online casinos and sports betting sites [3]. iGO spent the rest of 2021 and early 2022 issuing licences. The Ontario sports betting market went live in April 2022.

The rules for Ontario sportsbooks are pretty much the same today as they were in 2022. iGO tightened some advertising rules, but, by and large, the overall framework remains the same. A sportsbook has to have an iGO license to be legal in Ontario.

Pinnacle is not a flashy sportsbook. Instead, it is focused on delivering value. Pinnacle has very low margins, which, if you’re new to sports betting, means it takes a smaller cut of your bets. This means better odds and bigger returns if you win your wagers.

Overall, Pinnacle definitely doesn’t have as many top features as other sites. If you’re someone who just wants to bet on the NHL, NBA, and other North American sports, though, it is hard to find a sportsbook that offers more value than Pinnacle.

Speaking of betting on sports, LeoVegas has 32 different sports available to bet on year-round. This is a huge selection of markets compared to other top sportsbooks in Ontario. However, many sites organise their markets better. LeoVegas’s mobile site and betting apps are great, but the desktop site can be a little confusing. We almost never use it unless we have to.

888sport - Personalised Sports Betting Features

888sport is a brand with a huge reputation across the pond. In Canada though, it’s a hidden gem, and we’re not sure why. 888sport was also one of the first legal sportsbooks to go live in Ontario in April 2022, so it’s been around a while [4]. We think that bettors must not be giving 888sport a chance because, if they have been, it definitely would be more popular.

To start, 888sport does a great job of delivering a tailored sports betting experience to its bettors. For example, after we started betting with 888sport, we started getting bets and markets suggested to us on the Made For You page.

Unlike other sportsbooks that have similar features, the suggestions actually felt right. They were not simply bets that 888sport was advertising because they were likely to be losing bets. The wagers were actually similar to ones we’ve bet in the past.

888sport also has a very solid betting app and other fun features like its free-to-play Perfect 10 game. However, some of its niche markets are a little limited compared to other sites.

TonyBet - Wide Selection of Betting Markets

TonyBet is a relative newcomer to the Ontario sports betting market. It launched in December 2022, a full eight months after most sportsbooks went live. Overall, TonyBet is similar to a lot of the sportsbooks that came before it and after. That’s not a bad thing, though.

While it does not have many standout features, TonyBet is a very solid sports betting site with fair odds and a very wide selection of betting markets. If you follow a niche sport or like to follow the smaller golf and tennis circuits, TonyBet will almost definitely have more bets for those markets than other sportsbooks. For example, TonyBet has a strong variety of esports bets, including League of Legends, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2.

The only real downside to TonyBet compared to other sportsbooks is its lack of betting apps. However, we have been reliably informed that TonyBet is working on something for the Ontario market. Until the TonyBet app goes live, the mobile site is a great alternative.

bet365 is arguably the most popular sportsbook in the world. You do not just have to take our word for it. bet365 CEO Denise Coates is the eighth-richest person in the United Kingdom and one of the richest women in the world [5], which is a testament to how popular her sportsbook is.

In Ontario, bet365 is not quite as popular as it is in the UK, but it’s definitely one of the best sportsbooks on the market right now. If you are someone who likes to bet on soccer, we would suggest that bet365 is the best sportsbook for you.

PowerPlay - Fastest Payouts

Since it was founded in 2018, PowerPlay has been focused on delivering the best sports betting experience possible to Canadian bettors. In our opinion, it has fallen short of that big goal, but not by much.

PowerPlay is one of our favourite online sportsbooks for betting on hockey and the NBA. Its markets for those sports and the other major leagues are as deep as any sportsbooks you will find. For example, we found that the average number of bets available for the NBA was over 180 per game. In the playoffs, that number easily grows to over 200.

Outside of these markets, PowerPlay is a bit more limited. At time of writing this piece, there are less than six different sports available to bet on. PowerPlay also doesn’t have a mobile app. However, when we reached out to PowerPlay for this piece, they told us that an app should be coming out soon.

Now, most of us don’t follow 40 sports, but if you are someone who follows smaller sports or someone who likes to try new things, bwin is a good option for you.

The only glaring negative abou bwin is its mobile app. It is only available on iOS.

NEO.bet - Best for Esports Betting

Most of our top-rated Ontario sportsbooks are established brand with big reputations and classic features. NEO.bet, on the other hand, is a relatively new name on the scene that’s focused on innovation.

For example, NEO.bet has leaned way into esports betting. The website has a dedicated esports betting page, where you can bet on League of Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty, and half a dozen other esports. Ontario Sports Betting Sites

There are 33 different legal sports betting sites in Ontario. They are each licensed and regulated by iGO and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). 32 of these sites are privately owned igaming operators. PROLINE+ is owned and operated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming corporation (OLG).

Ontario Online Sports Betting Requirements

Anyone who is over the age of 19 years old can legally bet on sports in Ontario. This applies for both online sportsbooks and in-person sports betting at Ontario casinos and sports betting kiosks. However, you may bet on sports in person using OLG kiosks if you are 18 years old.

Ontario has no remote registration limits. You can create your sportsbook account in person at one of Ontario’s five land-based sportsbooks or from the comfort of your home using your computer or mobile device.

You do not need to be a resident of Ontario to bet on sports with Ontario sports betting sites. However, sites use geolocation services. If you are located outside of Ontario, you will not be able to place bets using your Ontario sportsbook account.

Some Ontario sportsbooks are available in other Canadian provinces. These are typically separate legal entities from the Ontario site, so you will not be able to use your Ontario account in those provinces. However, this varies from site to site and is a bit of a legal grey area for some sportsbooks.

What Can I Bet on in Ontario?

The Ontario sports betting market is very relaxed compared to other major sports betting markets. You can bet on the NFL, NHL, NBA, and other major North American sports leagues as well as hundreds of leagues and minor sports from all around the world. Overall, there are very few restrictions on the types of bets available and sports available to bet on.

Political betting, including Canadian election betting, are completely legal in Ontario. For comparison, betting on politics is still formally outlawed in the US (although that might change before the 2028 presidential election).

Betting on college sports is also completely open. While some American states have limits on player prop bets and betting on “in-state teams,” no such restrictions exist in Canada. You can bet on NCAA March Madness, the College Football Playoffs, and any other college betting market you desire.

Esports is another tricky subject south of the border that is not an issue in Ontario. League of Legends, Overwatch, CS:GO, and all other popular esports are widely available to bet on at the vast majority of Ontario sportsbooks. 

What can’t I bet on in Ontario?

As we’ve just explained, there are not many things you cannot bet on in Ontario. Minor league sports —such as the Canadian Hockey League’s Western Hockey League, Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, and Ontario Hockey League— are the only mainstream sporting markets that are off limits to Ontario sports bettors.

Mobile Sports Betting in Ontario

Ontario is unique in Canada as the only province that has legal sports betting apps. This is because it is the only market that is fully regulated. You can download these apps on the Apple App Store for iOS devices and the Google Play Store for Androids.

However, keep in mind that not all Ontario sportsbooks have sports betting apps. Pinnacle, for example, has opted to focus on its mobile sports betting site rather than an app. A lot of sportsbooks have done this. Generally speaking, most mobile sites are very solid and good options for betting on your phone. They are a little less convenient, though, and tend to be less streamlined.

If you’re someone who plans to exclusively wager on your phone, it’s probably best to pick a sportsbook that has a betting app. 

Gambling Taxes in Ontario

There is no tax on gambling winnings in Ontario. Per Canadian tax law, you do not have to pay taxes on any gambling winnings, unless you are a professional gambler [6]. So, unless you are someone who makes a substantial amount of your annual income betting on sports every year, you do not need to worry about paying gambling taxes in Ontario.

With all this being said, remember that you have to pay taxes on interest. If you win money betting on sports and invest it, keep track of the interest you accrue, since you will have to pay taxes on that. 

Can I Bet on Sports at Offshore Sportsbooks in Ontario?

No, offshore sites are not legal in Ontario. All sportsbooks and online casinos must have a licence from iGO. If they do not have one, they are illegal. Most offshore sites are no longer available in the Ontario market for this reason. If you are somehow able to access one, it is not worth the risk.
